The ancient tradition of pilgrimage in a town in northern Portugal begins the night before the procession, when women of Ribeira decorate carpets with symbolic images and compositions designed in colored sea salt. Participants and observers, men and women, citizens and visitors, all become part of the same event in sacred time and space during the Night of the Carpets. The next day's procession, dedicated to the Holy Virgin, definitely reveals a fusion of Roman Catholicism and folk religiosity.
