The discovery of huge coal depositsin the area of Ordos in China (central Mongolia) has turned the once very poor region into a modern area of social welfare. A state-directed development programme foresees the emptying of rural areas in order to enable the exploitation of coal and the relocation of farmers in an urban centre, built specifically for them. The film deals with coping with a new way of life and forcible urbanization of a huge number of Chinese peasants.
