Over the centuries, the public role of women in patriarchal societies was, to put it mildly, limited. The activities such as playing the double flute, šargija and bugarija, singing and teaching others how to play and sing require great skills and a lot of love and energy. Marica Filipović, a self-taught folk musician, the only one in her region and one of few in Bosnian and Herzegovinian traditional culture, is active in small villages in central Bosnia, such as Gornji Lug, Donji Lug and Brankovići. She is known as Danuša’s Mara. With the help of diligent and dedicated neighbours, active in the Ognjišta Folklore Ensemble, she nurtures and preserves the folk music, songs and dances of the Croats in the Zenica-Doboj Canton.
