Since he was 13, the illiterate Tibetan (the northeastern Himalayas, Central Asia) nomad Dawa has had a ‘a gift’ of telling The Epic of King Gesar, which is believed to originate from the 12th century and is part of the oral tradition of many peoples in Central Asia. Therefore, within his community, he is believed to be a holy person and the state has designated him as a bearer and guardian of China’s intangible cultural heritage.
